Spufford, H.M.

Margaret Spufford, born in Hartford, UK, in 1935. Ph.D. from Cambridge University. Associate Professor of History at the University of Cambridge.

Fellow (1 September 1992 - 30 June 1993)

During my time at the NIAS I studied the coincidence of high literacy rates with Protestantism an its effects on commercial success. I have also written the 'Introduction', consisting of four original essays, on 'The Importance of Religion, in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century England' to a volume by my research students, The World of Rural Dissenters, 1520-1725, edited by myself, which is now in the Cambridge University Press, and should come out next year.
