Wink, A.

André Wink

André Wink, born in Hollandia, Netherlands New Guinea, now Jayapura, Indonesia, in 1953. Ph.D. from Leiden University. Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Fellow (1 September 1997 - 30 June 1998)

During my stay at NIAS I collected materials for the third volume of my book Al-Hind: The Making of the Indo-Islamic World. My research focussed primarily on geographical factors which had an impact on historical developments in the Indian Ocean region, particularly in the fourteenth to fifteenth centuries. Of special interest to me has been the interplay between settled societies of the Indian river plains and the pastoral-nomadic societies of the arid and semi-arid zone of Central Asia, Iran and parts of the Indian subcontinent.

In addition, I carried out research on the development of maritime trade in the Indian Ocean, and the increasing importance of island archipelagos from East Africa to Indonesia
