Richard Boyd, born in Cardiff, UK, in 1950. Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow. Associate Professor of Japanese Politics at Leiden University.

Fellow (1 September 1998 - 30 June 1999)

The research nucleus "East Asian and Latin American Developments Compared" was concerned with the different economic performances of East Asian and Latin American countries in the postwar period. My contribution to the theme group has centered upon the consequences for economic development of different forms of state making in Japan and Mexico, specifically of different institutional responses to social conflict. Of particular interest here is the discovery that although governments in both countries make extensive use of economic rents the political constraints which govern their deployment is quite different. The different usages are in both cases deeply institutionalised in the process of state formation with long run and enduring consequences for contemporary economic management
