Fellow (1 September 2001 - 31 January 2002)
My research at the NIAS year 2001/02 was part of the research theme group "Danger of Community Failure". It focused on co-operation from a game-theory view and on collective decision-making from a social choice theoretic point of view. I elaborated two models about the dynamics of coalition formation. Furthermore, I explored several paradoxes of power by means of co-operative game theory. These power paradoxes may be interpreted as community failure.
The results of the year are presented in six papers most of which have been submitted to journals of which one has already been accepted (Public Choice). In addition, I was able to think about and to develop a research program entitled "Dynamics of Collective Decision-making". In this program, social choice theory and dynamical systems theory will be combined.
The program makes a distinction between three types of collective decision-making systems, to wit, small-scale systems like a university board or a board of directors of a firm, large-scale systems like elections, and complex decision-making networks like national political decision-making. This program will be the guideline for my research in the coming years.
