Pieter Emmer, born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1944. Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam. Professor of the History of European Expansion at Leiden University.

Fellow (1 September 2002 - 30 June 2003)

During my stay at NIAS, I cooperated closely with the other fellows working on the past and present of human migration, in particular with my co-Fellows Klaus Bade and Leo Lucassen. The three of us together with Jochen Oltmer of Osnabrueck are the editors of a multi-volume encyclopaedia entitled 'Migration and Integration since 1500, A European Encyclopaedia' to be published by Fink/Schoeningh in Germany and Cambridge University Press in the USA. In addition, I started work on a small monograph, commissioned by De Arbeiderspers, which will look at migration in the past, present and future.

I also finished editing a multi-author manuscript 'Deus ex Machina Revisited. The Impact of Overseas Expansion on the Economies of Europe, 1500-1900' to be published by Variorum/Ashgate Publishers (Aldershot, UK). I also prepared the second edition of my book on the history of the Dutch slave trade, published various articles and contributions on the history of forced and free migration in newspapers and popular as well as scholarly journals. In addition, I took part in various radio and television interviews and programmes, and gave talks, interviews and participated in discussion panels at of NGO meetings, employment firms, government ministries, and Dutch and foreign universities.
