THE PENITENTIAL STATE. ROYAL RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY IN THE CAROLINGIAN WORLD

Most of the book I intended to write at NIAS, entitled The Pentitential State: Atonement and Authority in the Reign of Louis the Pious, 814-840, has been completed. A synopsis and three sample chapters have been sent to Cambridge University Press for consideration. The penultimate draft of the manuscript (c. 100.000 words, full text) will be sent to N.W.O. by October 1st. The book should be in the press by early 2007. Additionally, I turned two conference papers into book chapters.
The 10 months of undisturbed work at NIAS gave me a chance to go off the beaten track, and to get an entirely new perspective on problems I had worked on for a long time. NIAS staff was helpful as always, creating the ideal conditions for work.
Yet the greatest bonus of this year has been the opportunity to work as part of a congenial theme group, which was augmented with at least four other fellow medievalists who the top floor with us. The interaction with has been an exceptional privilege, and it has helped my work more than anything. For the rest, I refer you to the progress report for our theme group.
