THE INFLUENCE OF THE SYLLABO-TONICS REFORM IN THE DUTCH VERSE ON THE SUBSEQUENT FUTURE OF EUROPEAN VERSIFICATION

The basic results of my research at NIAS consist of the following: I completed a broad investigation into the rhythm of short and long Dutch iambic verse from the late 16th to the beginning of the 18th centuries in comparison with German iambic verse. My research leads me to propose the hypothesis that not only the metre, but also the rhythm of some samples of early German iambic verse contain signs of Netherlands influence. One can observe similar rhythmic tendencies in Dutch and German iambic verse from the first half of the 17th century. However, the development of these tendencies in German verse is not always directly the result of Dutch influence. Research into verse on the basis of language models demonstrates that these tendencies could arise in German iambic verse on the basis of the German language. The hypothesis about the independence of versification technique from the proximity of language was confirmed. Versification can have substantive qualitative differences in spite of linguistic similarity. Apparently, the technique of versification presented in probability models was determined not by linguistic proximity but by the stage of development of versification.
