The Dutch L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship program stimulates the scientific careers of talented young women Life Scientists with the aim of increasing the number of women professors in Netherlands in the long run. The fellowship constitutes a national initiative within the International For Women in Science program sponsored by L'Oréal and UNESCO and supported by the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH).
Even though women increasingly attain the highest academic levels, they are still under-represented at the top levels of scientific research. With the introduction of the Dutch Fellowship For Women in Science in 2013, L'Oréal, UNESCO, the Dutch Network of Women Professors and NIAS commit to promoting scientific careers and identifying outstanding women scientists.
Each year, two L’Oréal-UNESCO FWiS grants of €25,000 are awarded for residential fellowships at NIAS of three or five months, respectively. Women scientists, up to ten years after their doctorate (Vidi level) and currently affiliated with a Dutch University or Institution are eligible to apply. The FWiS fellowship at NIAS offers scholars from the Life Sciences an opportunity to work without interruption on their research and publications. They are a part of an international environment where they can benefit from an exchange of ideas with scholars from humanities and social sciences disciplines. Depending on the duration of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to use remaining grant to attend relevant international meetings, to organise a workshop or to pay for childcare (following consultation with NIAS).
L'Oréal and UNESCO sponsor international and national initiatives For Women in Science (FWiS). The Fellowship is a Dutch initiative within the framework of the international L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program, which was founded in 1998 in the firm belief that the world needs science and science needs women. Each year, the For Women in Science Programme highlights scientific excellence and encourages talent through the For Women in Science Awards, international Fellowships, and national fellowships.
The Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH) is a network of over 850 female professors and associate professors who together represent every discipline and all Dutch Universities. The LNVH aims to promote the proportionate representation of women in academia.
This fellowship came about after talks between Aafke Hulk (former Rector of NIAS), L’Oréal, UNESCO and the LNVH in October 2011. The agreement was signed by all the directors in 2012 and a special Jury was installed. The first fellow was selected and arrived at NIAS for the academic year 2013-14. The recipients of the new fellowship were announced at Pump your Career and the World Science festival.
