Neuroscientist Greg Siegle from the theme group "My optimism wears heavy boots" will discuss his project on mental health, technology and ethics.

About the Seminar

"I will discuss scientific, technological, and ethical considerations for a new generation of wearable technologies that have the purpose of helping people to better regulate their emotions. The science involves automated monitoring of people's emotional reactions and using reactive stimulation to manage their stress physiology without having to "work" at regulating emotion. You can see a recent summary of what we've been up to in a recent grant proposal video below.
The emergence of these technologies opens a host of ethical issues, which will be our primary focus for discussion, involving how comfortable we are with machines "controlling" our emotions, the potential for these devices to be hacked, and how to get ahead of the curve of their possible misuses."

About NIAS Seminars
