Texture Analysis Challenge for The Arts

Robert Erdmann, University of Arizona, Tuscon
Laurens van der Maaten, Delft University of Technology

The digital analysis of visual texture poses an important challenge for computer science and artificial intelligence. In human vision, texture recognition refers to the ability of observers to recognize curtains, tapestry, clothing, or pigments from their visual statistical properties. Digital texture analysis refers to computer programs that can analyse or classify visual textures in digital images. Computer-supported analysis of the visual texture of photographs, paintings, or canvas, enable art historians and conservators to improve the quality and efficiency of their assessments of photographs and paintings.
